Hi,

I have a 15" flat panel Imac, 700MHz, G4
Memory: 256 MB SDRAM
OSX 10.3.8

I want to buy more memory, as things are slowing down a bit due to more and more work with photos and graphics.

What are my best options (given that I am working with a small budget) in terms of a good place to buy the memory and how much memory to get? Also, does the current 256 module have to be completely replaced or can I add memory to it? Finally, where is a good place to get the memory installed and how pricey is the installation (or is it something folks usually do themselves)?

All information very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Dale

Hi Dale,

OSX is really dependent on memory for performance, especially if you leave things running while you work on something else, like I do. 256MB is barely adequate for Jag. Adding 256 is probably your best bet if you're on a tight budget. I'm not even sure if you can add 512 in the 2nd slot, but if you can afford it and it will work, you won't have to take one of the cards out to get more memory. Just a thought. One of the mags did a test and added memory in increments and measured the performance. The system was still getting faster at 2 GBs! I'm thinking about adding more myself. But even 256 should make a big difference. Would also suggest defragging and have plenty of HD space (I've heard 20% is the minimum). I need to work on the iMac as I'm under 20% free now and it seems sluggish compared to what it was. Good luck.
