Just thoughts:
Have him make a list of things he wants in a
computer... what it should run, quality of monitor
,etc Have him narrow it down to exactly what he
wants. Have him shop according to what he's
looking for and what his budget allows... not what
he happens to find.
Find gentle ways to remind him not to buy just for
the sake of buying... I tend to do this myself
sometimes - the impulse to buy because it's 'such
a bargain' sometimes overcomes the common sense of
'do i NEED that'? I may shop in discount stores,
thrift stores, garage sales (and my favorite -
craigslist), but just because I buy second hand,
doesn't mean I'm always making wise buying choices.
Whenever he's at your house, have the TV on with
'Clean Sweep' or 'Mission Organization' - though
he may not be a clutter freak, the tips on that
show, and the process of letting go of stuff
you're not using can be helpful and inspriring.
One good rule of thumb - if you're going to buy
something new, you must get rid of something, too.
Encourage him to sell the equipment he's not
using, or donate it.
I like the previous suggestion of introducing him
to less harmful addictive behaviour... online
games, freeware.
