The factual info I know (not much): If I'm not mistaken it's a form of a condition called Cassandra Syndrome, fairly common in the elderly but it occurs in people in about middle age onwards as a rule. It can take the form of collecting just about anything. I saw a documentary on it, with one lady who had a back yard full of fences. Yes, any sort of fencing you can imagine, plies and piles of it. As long as the material being collected does not pose a health or safety risk, there is usually little that can be done about it as those with it rarely, and I mean rarely see it as a problem. Pushing the issue usually simply results in bad feelings within the family. Bottom line: if he can afford this, and it is not injuring his health (in other words, he is not spending the grocery money on Macs, and is not hardwiring hard drives to the light sockets), then he is pretty much free to do what he likes.
