You won't erase your hard drive unless you run the drive setup program that is usually on OS cds . So its pretty hard to accidentally mess anything up, don't worry :). #1 reboot and hold down the "c" key with the cd in the computer. (though this step probably isn't necessary. I always just run the downloadable update while booted normally but since you have a cd why not) #2 Run the installer. During the installation process you will have a check box to update hard disk drivers. This also won't erase anything so leave it checked. If you do a custom install you do have the option to upgrade or do a clean system install. This may not be an option since you say yours is a upgrade cd... it might not have all the pieces of 9. In any case in the past I've went from 8.5 to 9 and on up just doing the upgrade option with no problems. The only thing I'd suggest is running some type of disk utility before doing the upgrade to make sure your file structure is fine. Tech Tool, DiskWarrior, Nortons or at least the little disk first aid utility that apple puts on there, then afterwards rebuild the desktop. On older OS's rebuilding the desktop avoids some problems.
