You need a firewire drive to boot. You can't boot from a USB drive

Have you considered backing up to an external harddrive? I backed up my iMac onto an AcomData external drive that used both FireWire 400 and USB 1. Make sure to use Carbon Copy Cloner, so you'll have a bootable copy. Also, it appears that some hard drives cannot be booted from, so make sure yours is bootable. My AcomData of about 3-4 years ago is bootable, as is my newer LaCie Big Disk.
