Hi Guys and ladies ;-) I've had the same prob last week on a 266mhz iMac G3 - it was a bad RAM stick, so I've just took one out and left a 256MB on the bottom.... then overwrite the HD and made a clean install...

Dean > Try booting from install CD to see if it works. Run the Disk Utility > from the install CD to check the disk.
