I was going to suggest that when you said it booted in OS9. Be sure
you have the correct firmware installed.

However, I started from the OS 9 CD, and switched the start up disk
to OS 9. It now starts fine from OS 9.
I think I'll do a CD back up of the things that interest me, and
will do a reformat and new clean install when the 'new' iMac
arrives. (sigh)
