Yes.  You should always trim the whole for context.

Personally I find it easier to read with the newest on top (like gmail does it) and if I want to know what they are referring to, I can scroll down or go back to the beginning of the thread.

Easy enough, if you're only following one or two threads. Many people, however, follow dozens or hundreds of threads - over a months time, in many different venues. The quick context review makes for on-point trackable replies.
