iMac 350 Blueberry, 192 MB 6G HD, running OS 9.1.

I get a lot of Windows Movie Files (.wmf, .wmv, wma, etc.) from friends,
and some I can open and play just fine using my Windows Media
Player app. Many times though, I can=B9t seem to get the video to
come up; audio plays great. This is a hit-or-miss situation, and I=B9ve
even tried sending the files to my G4 Titanium (OS 9,1) with the same
results. Why do some play fine, and others no video?

Codecs. If that word means nothing to you, go here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec

Basically, OS 9 can play SOME wmv/avi et al files because SOME codecs have Mac versions. Others don't.

It goes without saying that OS X can play more of them, since new codecs are usually ported -- there are still a couple that just don't play, but now that MS has licensed Flip4Mac's translator for QuickTime and is distributing it free, rare indeed is the WMV file that won't play in OS X.

Any suggestions on how to get both video and audio to play?

There's not much you can do about this until you get a new machine that runs OS X.

Cheers
Chas
