It is sad that we have to deal with SPAM like we do, however
I have found it almost a necessity in running a public mail
server.
I actually considered opening up either a mailing list or
a bulletin board forum just for that purpose. However
there were a couple of factors which concerned me.
One, as I point out to anyone that I assist with this, what
is one man's SPAM may be another man's treasure. What
I filter may be too restrictive for others. And I would not want
to get into a situation where a big debate was held regarding
whether something should be considered as SPAM or not.
I only filter stuff that is taken from actual SPAMS received
here on our servers or picked up from NANAE however
this does occasionally mean throwing the baby out with the
bathwater.
Two, such a forum would have to be private and access restricted
only to known admins that were interested in stopping such garbage.
Once any known SPAMMER got on the list or got access to
the global rules then it would be easy for them to get around those
rules. Or make myself and others in the forum open game for some
SPAM slinging.
I am still open for suggestions on this. I have only implemented the
filtering here to work with the current Imail setup. There are
several ways this could be improved and hopefully Ipswitch will one
day address this issue a little closer. However what is available does
work pretty well.
Of the options I would like to see if the ability to send filtered mail
to a holding area. An administrator could then examine the filtered
messages and decide whether they are valid or not and be able to
selectively send these messages on to their destination transparent
to the user. This method would be better than utilizing one of the
systems such as MAPS in that it would allow the administrator to
decide what mail they do not want to receive.
Anyone that ever used Paul Sica's SPAM filter on IMS mail server
is probably familiar with the Trash bin and the ability to move valid
messages
to the Incoming folder and have the processed normally if they were
caught by mistake or for some other reason. Just one of those things
on my wish list.
