fortuneatly I am not running imail....
informing our everyone of our customers to change the email client is
unacceptable. (you see it was already set-up this way when I got here)
does imail support pop before smtp? can a user check thier mail and be
allowed to relay through my server from that ip address (determined when
he checks his mail) for a given amount of time?

I know there is one setting in Imail that will allow relay only for
"local
users".
That is probably secure enough, until it gets abused. The problem is -
what are you going to do if (when) it gets abused? Why not set it up
securely the first time?
As i have said before, relaying mail for someone who is not your
customer
is not a good idea. Not on today's internet.
My suggestion is to relay for:
1. IP addresses that you own and control, (i.e. on your LAN).
2. Roaming users based on POP3 authenticate before SMTP send,
SMTP AUTH, or similar means to authenticate valid users
and customers.
