It's not about weather or not they can all set it up or not.. It's the
fact that they see everything as running fine until I inconvenience them
again.
I'll have to do it if there is no other choice, but I had just come
across that "pop before smtp" feature somewhere else.  I don't
particularly like the program it was on, but would solve my
problem.We're talking about hundreds possibly thousands of people that
hardly know how to turn their computer on ;)

What client(s) are they using?

Your mail client Outlook Express supports most popular authentication
mechanisms. Eudora does also.
