I don't know about AOL's filters, but to answer your question - 

Many filters are based (trigger) on the IP address of the SMTP server that
sent the mail. If you are in one of the Open Relay lists, you might be
able to send mail via a host that was not in the Open Relay list. 

Please note that that situation is probably temporary. The Open Relay list
will soon find your new benefactor. In fact your open relay, will get an
otherwise secured mail server listed as an Open Relay. It's called a chain
of relays. 

It is not in the best interest of anyone to relay mail for you when you
are an Open Relay, because doing so will get them listed also.
