That is primarily meant for speeding up connections across a modem.  The "MTU" (Maximum Transmission Unit) size determines the Frame size into which IP packets are placed to move across the physical media (in this case the phone line).  The phone lines carry packets more efficiently at a smaller frame size than do t-1's, dsl, ISDN or Ethernet connections.  That will only help you if you connect across an analog phone line, otherwise it will slow you down by making your machine work harder to place packets into smaller frames that will perform more slowly across other media types.  (Double Whammy)

Subject: [IMail Forum] OT: Change Packet Size to enhance performance ???

Hello.  Sorry, this is a bit OT, but I'm sure people have seen something
like this, and it could be useful to all...

I got several emails about a program what will "speed up" internet access 200%.
What it does, I think, is play with the packet size that Windows uses.  Now, I'm sure
I'm getting the terminology wrong (I don't think it is called Packet Size), but if I remember,
there is a setting in windows for a default packet for TCP/IP of 1500 bytes...  this program
adjusts it to something like 532, or some odd number which is the "real" packet size
used on the net.

First, does anyone know what the heck I am talking about?  : )

Second, is this a setting that anyone has done on a server and not just on
a workstation?  Would this enhance throughput on a server?

Thanks in advance

Chris Ulrich
