The failure of the Mac to win much of a marketshare during the DOS 
and Win3.1 days point out the possible problems (to put it politely 
and mildly) with this point of view.

If by "different systems" you mean systems as different as Win3.1 and 
WinNT, then there is only one linux out here.

I don't know about the whole discussion, but certainly the key to 
much of MicroSoft's market dominance is tied to this area.
