The reality is that it was given away. Xerox had developed it and then
it was decided not to exploit it. Then Steven Jobs was invited to be a
guest to the results of the research and he just came up with his own
version as did Gates. Xerox essentially gave it to these guys. Years
later when they realized what they had given away they tried to
litigate but there are limits to the time this has enforceable
legitimacy, as was shown.

I had the enormous honor to be nominated for the Lemelson MIT Prize,
the highest prize awarded inventors, by  the Chairman of the American
Heart Association a few years back. I didn't win the half million
dollar prize, but I was very happy to see the inventor of the mouse
pointer concept, from that Xerox group, finally be rewarded with this
prize. At least he received some reward after all the other scrambling
to cash in his ideas.

What is great about Windows in particular is all the software which it
has caused to be produced, like WS_FTP and IMail for example. <g>
