Sorry! I have to step in here...

the "free PC" deal is the best thing in our industry. The "digital divide"
between the have Internet and have-nots is getting bigger and bigger. there
are many articles on this, but basically unless you are middle-class, you
probably don't have a PC or the Internet.

Since Internet is becoming crucial to jobs, recruiting, and other economic
activities, the needy/and underprivileged are finding themselves even more
dis-enfrancised.

Drive through the "East Side" of a major city and tell me everyone "has
net"? They don't!

With these deals, for the price of dial-up, that would have to be paid
anyway, many many people will be able to get a very functional PC that is
suitable for email, web browsing, and general computing.

The only problem I see is the credit checks - this will still exclude many
of exactly the right people that this deal appeals to.

the ability for self-help and self-improvement should be available to
everyone, even minimum wage job-earners, not just hacker/hobiest geeks that
earn $50K, $80K, $100K or more per year.

On that I agree 100%. I think that within the month that will be a network
news special and MSN, AOL, Prodigy, and the others who have been in this
deal will wish they never had been. It is a despicable abuse and the only
thing worse is that our educational system turns out dupes every day who
will sign these agreements.
