Is this service set to Log On as System in the services? Might 
double-check, it should be.

Did you have the IMail Administrator open when you ran the last patch? Our 
luck with Imail patches has been that *nothing* should be open. This holds 
true for most patches, it just seems IMail patches aren't too concerned 
with checking application states before they run.

Again, what credentials is this using when it tries to run? It should be 
running as System.

If I were you, I would close/kill every unnecessary process/service, and 
reinstall 6.x, then patch it to 6.02 and reboot whether it wants to or not. 
Just what I would do.
