Despite all the talk about the problem here, it has been almost completely
about the problems rather than finding a solution.
There appear to be 2 problems. First, IMail doesn't send a CRLF after its
CRAM-MD5 authentication -- but, this is only seems to be a problem when
buggy browsers connect (since IMail *doesn't* say that it accepts
CRAM-MD5 -- at least on my 6.03 system).
The second problem hasn't been defined yet. The main symptom reported is
that users can't authenticate, but if they try again a minute later, they
can. The other symptom (only reported by one person that I can remember) is
that the SMTP service can hang when a recent-but-now-obsolete version of
Eudora connects.
I've been trying to reproduce this (I'm not sure why, since I'm not affected
by it), but the only confirmed way to reproduce the problem requires using
Eudora 4.3, which I can't find (just 4.3.x).
