We ran into CPU and performance issues when the NT event log filled.
Clearing the logs would get performance back until it reached a certain
size. Being anal about stuff, I'd set the NT domain policy to log file and
object access. I took off this logging option and the CPU utilization
generally stays below 5%. It was bizarre because it seemed to primarily
cause problems with the SMTP process not POP.

If you don't see any errors in your Imail logs, you might try clearing your
NT logs to see if this might be the issue.
