It is an smtp verification method.  Imail (as does almost all mail servers) 
does IP checking and/or username password in order to relay mail through 
the server. (unless, of course, you want to leave the server open)

I am not too familiar with Pop before smtp, but basically you POP check 
your mail via username/ password authentication, and the mail server will 
dynamically add your IP to the "allowed IP" list for SMTP relay for a 
period of x minutes (20- 30 minutes is a good time to set)

This is another way to allow users to relay mail when not coming from an 
"allowed"IP.  Direct SMTP username/ password authentication can be burdensome.
