Just a follow-up.  The problem was that I had another process (unrelated to mail) on the sever that was failing and never completing.  Since the process ran every 20 minutes, after several hours I didn't have enough memory to run an SMTP process.

Those who responded they were having the same symptoms may want to check available memory when the problem occurs.

Ron,

It just started at random.  We have been running for several months now without a problem, however because of other server problems and upgrades we have had to reload the IMAIL software a couple of times but not recently. (not recent enough to cause the problem)

Rod,

Did this problem start with any specific version or config changes or has it been occurring since installation?

I am having the same problem only less frequent.  Mine happens once or twice a week.  Can’t see what the problem is either?

About one or twice a day since last Friday my SMTP shut down.  When I go to the server there is a Windows error box stating "COMCLT32.dll failed to initialize properly".  I restart the server and all is fine for the next 2 to 5 hours, then the same thing.  The only change I made on Friday was to add an ip to the relay mail for list.  I have since removed that ip and it didn't help.

I am running IMAIL 6.02 with 50 domains and approx 800 users.
