yes, the answer is no.

Note that some/many SMTP AUTH failures are due to the front-end SMTP 
AUTH process not being able to read 'backend' database.  How can you 
disgtinguish between an SMTP AUTH database failure and a SMTP AUTH 
process hang?

The former actually comes back to say "auth failure" or similar, 
while the latter doesn't come back at all.

Look <guess where> to see which it is in your case.
