Sorry, sucky faxmodem.
Can you borrow another modem? Maybe an old courrier, a zyxel 1496 or
newer? I bet there's just some handshake pb between the fax driver
and the modem, forgetting about the (in)ability of Sportster faxmodem
to connect to fax machines. The fax company, GFIfax.com, explicitly
recommend against Sportsters, and my experience, in Sportster vs
Zyxel 1496 comparison, under Symantec Winfax (a pgm that know a thing
or two about faxmodem drivers) showed the Sportster to be really crappy.
