... which leads me to believe that Imail is not even seeing traffic 
from these users, because AOL could be rolling out (ie, incomplete, 
sporadic failures seen by users, and "getting worse" ) blocking of 
all DUL-to-port:25 on all ip addresses except those of AOL's own SMTP servers.

Tell your clients to create another personality/account in their mail 
client that sends mail to AOL rather than to your Imail.  They can 
always use POP3 to read their mail on your Imail server.
