I had this problem too.
Basically My boss and I were sharing an IMAP box and he was gathering the
mail via POP rather than IMAP. So, while there were messages in the box, I
didn't get any errors. If he collected all the mail before I could then I
got the error. If I got it first, no problem.
After I realized he was using POP and moved him to IMAP now more messages
stay in the box and it works. I don't know what would happen if we deleted
all of the messages again.
So, in the end, the only thing I can suggest is perhaps leaving a dummy
message in the inbox.
