James,
A lot of cable modem providers will claim that they uses DHCP, when they
actually uses "static/persistent" DHCP. This means that, even when you have
a DHCP address, it will not change. If you have this type of configuration,
then you will not have any problem hosting an email server on your computer.
On the other hand, if you do have a true DHCP situation, then you might
be able to get away with it if you have a computer/router that you can
dedicated to be on 24/7. This may/may not keep your IP, as long as you have
your computer on and connected to the cable modem.
In both cases above, you would want to consider having some sort of
firewall/NAT device connected btwn your mail server and Cable modem. I
personally uses LinkSys Cable/Router which keeps my IP "static", and it has
a built-in NAT.
As for DNS, you can use one of the Free Dynamic DNS provider, or better
still, if you can afford it, get your own domain, which should come with the
interface to do your DNS. Alternately, you can host your own DNS server,
which means this server will have to be on 24/7 also.
Hope this helps... BTW, who is your cable provider?
