The major benefit of them limiting what servers the users can send mail through is
that it keeps them from sending mail through a server that is an open mail relay.

Looks like most ISPs are moving this way. The objective, I believe, is to
prevent dial-up users from sending mail direct (ala Maps DUL) and for the
ISP to have the advantage of mail logs.
We are primarily a web hosting company. Most of our customers use their
ISP's smtp and configure their client with a reply address of their domain
name. Most of that mail is merely forwarded to their existing pop at their
ISP.
It hasn't been a problem here, since we started in 1995.
