Thanks for sending me the information below. I perhaps should clarify the
situation a bit more. The SMTP authentication that fails is for POP3
clients, not webmail. I have very few users, if any that actually use
webmail on a consistent basis.
After talking to Ipswitch tech support, they told me the issue was a "memory
leak" and had me upgrade to Ver. 6.05 and two subsequent patches. It seems
to be working now, but I think its too early to tell....
I assume, based on your explanation that there really is no "fix" that you
are aware of beyond the upgrade path. Is this correct?

yes, many here have this pb. It is a major
weakness. Specifically, there is an SMTPD process, different from
the SMTPD process that is holding the session with the SMTP client,
that does the SMTP AUTH function. When its dead, the SMTP session
dies just after the SMTP client (a user's mail pgm) asks for key to
encrypt the username + password. The SMTPD AUTH process doesn't
respond. This gives no error 550, it gives nothing at all.
The other situation is when the SMTPD AUTH process is running fine,
but cannot get to the username + password info, say in an external
database due to ODBC pb's or whatever. Here the SMTPD AUTH process
returns fatale error "550 unknown user".
There have been situation where IE clients could SMTP AUTH but NS
clients couldn't.
