I=92d like to add my two bits about this topic.
I administer 10 Imail servers that host approximately 5000 domains
and a little over 2 million customers. Because of the way the
previous administrator configured these servers (not completely
open relays, but when you add all of UUNet, they might as well
be), many of them are listed in one, the other or both blacklists.
We have been working over the last two months to remove all relay
ranges and force SMTP Auth. Not a simple task with 2 million
accounts across the world. As I=92ve made these changes I have e-
mailed both MAPS and ORBS to have the servers removed. MAPS has
been very professional, responsive, and even helpful. ORBS has yet
to reply to even one of my over 60 messages to them.
Another case in point. The company I work for has franchises that
use the corporate name, but are completely separate organizations.
One of them went under, but the PTR records were never changed
when PacWest re-assigned the address space. ORBS decided that they
should list several of our corporate mail servers and other
franchise mail servers because of complaints that originated from
this new, completely unrelated network. I explained this to ORBS,
but of course, they didn=92t reply and most certainly did not
remove
any of the servers. (These servers were already configured for
SMTP Auth and were not open relays when they were listed.)
I support responsible SPAM =93watch-dog=94 groups. I think that
they
can be well used. MAPS is a great example of a responsible group.
ORBS is a great example of one persons power hungry, =93I want to
be
God=94 trip across the Internet to get revenge or some other
personal vendetta. We don=92t need any help out there to scan open
mail relays. The professional spammers and hackers are doing a
great job of that already. ORBS also states that they e-mail the
postmaster@ account any time something is about to be listed. I
have yet to see a single one of these warnings.
And a comment to Mark on the DUL. The owners list most of the
addresses listed on the MAPS DUL voluntarily. Case in point, all
of my dial-up ranges are listed because we don=92t want people
sending e-mail directly from their dialup accounts.
So, in the end, I hope that ORBS is shutdown for good, that more
people will police their own networks and that we won=92t need
organizations like these in the future.
Thanks for listening to my rant. I hope that it will help open
eyes to the type of organization that ORBS is. I look forward to
everyone's comments.
