Boy I love this list. Thanks guys. I almost wasted a lot of dough on my DNS
server!
I'm reading the Microsoft White Paper: The Art and Science of Web Server
Tuning with Internet Information Services 5.0. One of the things it had me
check was, in performance monitor, 'System: Processor Queue Length'. It says
if this is hovering at two or above, I have a processor bottleneck. Well,
mine was hovering just above 4, with spikes to 16.
Now, this should interest everyone on the list since I know a lot of you run
iMail and IIS on the same box like I do. (My vendor said this was the
problem. The solution: Another Box!!!). Even though my CPU utilization was
0% - 4%, the queue length was high. I shut down my SQL server and stole
those two CPUs to try out in my web server. Instantly my web server
performance shot up. The 40 second page now takes 1.5 - 2 seconds!!! That's
across my 100 mbps connection, but still we should be well within 10 seconds
on a dial up.
So Tuesday I'll be putting two new P3s, or maybe P4s, in there permanently.
I never would have guessed this to be the problem since my CPU utilization
was so very very low!
Now I've got to just figure out why my server is so WINS hungry. That's just
weird. And I agree that could be slowing things down.

Don't touch your DNS server!
www.infodish.com resolved within less than 2 seconds on our system. And,
it should take almost exactly the same amount of time to do a DNS lookup of
the A record of www.infodish.com as for the MX record of infodish.com.
The one thing that I *did* notice is that when I telneted to
www.infodish.com on port 80, your WWW server almost immediately tried
connecting to the WINS server on the computer I was running. That could be
part of the problem. You should definitely know why that is
happening. That's considered very impolite. The problem may be, for
example, that with the DSL/T1 connection, you have a firewall that prevents
WINS access and drops the packets, so your web server is waiting for the
results before sending/finishing the web page.
