I know very little about lists; however, on every list that I've been on, replying to a list message replied to the list. This guy's complaint sounds like techno-babble ("I'm so important that I'm going to talk over everyone's head so that everyone will think I'm smarting than
them") so common among educators. All members of this list are technology staff (although their skills range from being the office expert in Word to network admins) in school districts. Most of the people interested or knowledgable about technology in the districts have this same holier-than-thou attitude and sometimes it's not easy to call their bluff.
Is this guy just rambling, or does he have a clue? (BTW, the overwhelming majority want to leave the list as it is, with reply to list turned ON).

I hope some people are not operating under a misaprehension here. The return receipt issue is an individual setting and not one that is controlled by the listserve software. The same holds true for vacation messages et al (we've had a few of those as well). Also, on any listserve software there should be no need to manually put anything in; If you hit "reply to all" it should go to both the individual sender AND the list (you can then delete the individual if you so wish). It simply requires an entry in the SMTP or IMAP variable in the listserve script(depending on your mail software). If this is not the case with the Techcoord list then maybe we should consider changing the listserve software.
I still want the list too, it is invaluable, but I don't want the same message 27 times, which is what is happening now. Basically, techcoords-owner is the only "entity" that should email techcoords@listserve; techcoords@listserve should be an alias that contains all the email addresses of the subscribers which is updated by the subscribe/unsubscribe script. Right now we appear to be replying to the list, NOT the listserve (software) which should be in control.

Most discussion lists have the "reply to" set as the list and not the original sender so that the flow of conversation is kept on the list. If we changed the list's "reply to" to be the original sender, this would mean that everyone would have to take the extra step of manually putting the list's address in the email message if wanting to reply to the list. When you replied without taking this extra step, only the person that originally sent this message would receive the reply.
If we kept the list the way it is, those people that choose to use return receipts could kindly turn the return receipt off on messages sent to the list.
Please send your votes to the list or to me privately. The majority of votes sent in by Friday, June 22 will prevail.

An item of more concern to me (especially after having been out of the office for a week) is the apparent inability to reply to the sender of a post individually, rather than the whole list. I for one am tired of receiving email receipts for people who have that option turned on in Outlook. Don't misunderstand, its not their fault, they have every right to utilize the receipt function; it is a failing of the listserver that it does not default to "reply" being the individual and "reply to all" being the list. I've metioned this before (and so have others) but nothing has been done.
Anyone else have any opinions on this?
