and stop/start SMTP services fixes the problem?

can you look in the logs and see if SMTP AUTH negatively, or whether after the
mail clien sent SMTP AUTH, the Imail SMTP AUTH process doesn�t respond.

first off, upgrade to the latest 6.0x, from the ipswitch site.  That�s your 
best chance of having SMTP AUTH be reliable.  No guarantee.

If on NT4, re-install SP6a.
