We monitor our system with WhatsUp Gold and I have to carry both a Sprint
PCS cell phone (A Samsung SCH-8500) and a Metrocall pager (AT&T Advisor
Elite) to make sure I get important system pages. The cell phone can be
anywhere from instant to never on the emails. However, if the primary
backbone is dead, WhatsUp cannot send an email to the cell phone! So I carry
an Alphanumeric pager as backup. It ALWAYS works! A modem on the WhatsUp box
allows it to send a page directly to the paging computer via an 800 number.
As a side note, I have the cell phone forward to the voicemail box of the
pager so I never miss a voicemail either... but I am stuck with 2 devices on
my belt all the time.
