Gene, When you set the SMTP Security to either No Relay or to use a list of IP Addresses, that has the effect of requiring clients to SMTP Auth.
I run Imail like that to stop open relay abuse. But if I have a customer who hasn't set their Email client to Authenticate on SMTP sending (that is send their name and password to log in when sending Email)... they get back an error message very similar to the one you got. Office 97/ Outlook 97 customers have to apply the latest Service Releases or upgrade to a better client... but everyone else can just change a setting to 'my server requires authentication' and that error stops. Rebooting did not work. I started with a stopping and restarting of SMTP. No luck then went to the restart of the entire server, no luck. Then I went to the stmp security tab and everything was set okay. I set mail relay open to all and then it worked. Of course I have set it back, so any ideas, is this wierd or what. > > > > I am stressin here.... > > > >Gene > > > >"Matthew Lohr" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > > >>That looks like a common problem with Outlook. Shutting down outlook does not seem to help try rebooting you machine and check it again. I can't not find this on MS website but I think it has to do with either the TCP/IP stack of the machine or Outlook itself > >>---------- Original Message ---------------------------------- > >>From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Gene Kingsley) > >>Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > >>Date: Mon, 04 Feb 2002 15:41:39 -0500 > >> > >>>Could someone explain this.
