PS. One more question on this issue.
I am hosting all my domains on 1 IP address, so all of my customer domains
are virtual hosts. Do you know how to use SMTP authentication in this case?
When I tried it with the @domainname.com it did not work, but then when I
removed it, and left only the userid, it worked right away. (I used an
account from my primary domain hosted on the real IP).

Yes,  create *one for every hosted domain* with the name of the domain
as its username.

N.B.,  this  does  mean that if a vengeful employee leaves one of your
customers,  they  will  have  the  credentials to send spam unless the
customer  asks  you to change the shared password. This is a much more
acceptable risk than what you've currently got going on, of course!
