A DNS server would never do it but a resolver could.  You didn't
mention what os the client machine is running but have him examine
the resolver configuration, e.g. running *BSD look at /etc/resolv.conf,
running MS-Windows look at "Domain suffix search order" on the DNS tab
of Microsoft TCP/IP Properties.
