The Internet has a number of valid TLDs (top level domains), such as ".com"
and ".uk". RFC2606 specifies that ".localhost" can be used for locally as
if it were a valid TLD. You're buddy is using ".local" instead -- but
since it isn't a valid TLD, any DNS server that encounters it (such as ones
that verify that the server is not forging its identity) will have to
contact the root servers to see if it is a new TLD that they don't know
about. The root servers get inundated with requests for such TLDs, because
of poor admins that don't know any better than to make up fake TLDs.

It would be best to figure out why the E-mail is being accepted back, so
that it can't happen again (and so that you'll have the same level of
security that you think you do).

wrong address.
