Your webserver does not need to have DNS running on it. When someone looks
up your domain name, they go to the root servers, which list the DNS
servers for your domain. Those DNS servers can be anywhere in the world,
they do not have to be on your webserver.
IMail uses DNS in just two ways:
[1] Indirectly: The first way is that DNS is used for people to send mail
to your server. If you host @example.com on your mailserver, example.com
needs to have an MX record pointing to your server. However, this is
external to IMail -- this is just a standard DNS lookup, and does not need
to involve the IMail server (it would *only* involve the IMail server if
the IMail server is also acting as an authoritative DNS server for
example.com).
[2] Directly: When IMail is sending out mail, it needs to look up the MX
record for the domains you are sending to. So if you are sending mail to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], IMail needs to look up the MX record for
example.com. This is done using "caching" DNS servers (ones that may or
may not be authoritative for any domains, but will perform standard DNS
lookups and caching). This uses whatever DNS server(s) you list in the
IMail SMTP settings.
So the *only* thing you must do DNS-wise on the IMail server is tell it
what DNS server(s) to use. These can be *any* DNS servers in the world
that will allow you to send requests to them, and will respond to
them. The easy way is to enter the DNS servers that your ISP gives you
when you get your Internet connection. If you have one or more local DNS
servers (either that act authoritatively for some of your domains, or ones
that are just used for your own lookups), you can enter those instead (or
in addition to the ISP settings). But the DNS settings in IMail do not
have to be any specific DNS servers, and those DNS servers do not need to
know anything about your domains.
