In a nutshell, I'm trying to figure out how to populate mailing lists over a network. Here's why:

We are setting up a broadcast system to reach emergency responders in the case of a wide-area "event." One component of the system will use email addresses culled from a custom contact database; the resulting address lists might be short, but in the case of a statewide alert will reach into the low thousands (3,000 is a likely maximum, though not definite yet).

Currently, we hope to use Imail's listserv feature to broadcast an email to a mailing list that we will create on the fly. That is not too hard, and I've already taught the existing contact database to export lists to users.lst and users.txt files that are suitable for dropping into an existing list directory (e.g., X:\imail\lists\broadcast).

However, many design considerations dictate that the contact database/control application run from a different server than the one running Imail. I would *like* to have the list files stored in a central, shared location, but the list directory is hard-coded into Imail, and tech support tells me that putting it on a network drive is not supported.

I tried moving the entire \Imail directory to a network drive, but true to the warning messages I received along the way, the results I obtained were erratic (e.g., previously working mailing lists would reject messages, saying they had no subscribers).

So, basically, what I want to do is quickly and automatically populate listserv users from another computer. I still have a couple of approaches in mind, but they seem like horrible kludges. Might anyone out there have solved this problem already, or have any suggestions? Did my description make sense?

Thanks, all, for your time!
