If there's one thing you can't assume about the nature of spam, is that it makes sense, or follows a pattern, or is consistent (that's 3 things). or, 4, sensible.Hmmm, I thought that might be what it was, but I always thought it would be more intensive than what it is. The logs show the same addresses over and over, so I thought it was an attempt at relaying.
I've seen some the stupidest, high-volume, multi-month attacks that never had a chance of succeeding at anything. You begin to think that they are not wanting to succeed in delivering mail, or harvesting addresses, but just for DoSsing, but most aren't high-volume enough for that.
Trying to "figger out spam and spammers" is mostly a waste of time
You have to be able analyze your log files objectively, it takes practice, and design a defensive reponse.
