And it will be worth the effort.  We finally bit the bullet last year and
switched to SMTP Auth.  It was a couple of weeks of pain, but now we have no
problems.  Auth works like a charm, we're as tight as you can make it, and I
can actually sleep soundly at night.

It is, at the end of the day, the only solution if you have users from
outside your network trying to transmit mail.  The only other method is to
get them to send through their ISP's SMTP server, but if that still means
they'll be phoning you, so you might as well take the plunge.
