I too had the same "growing pains" but it wasn't too bad. I tried to let the customers know as far in advance as I could that I was making the change and what the benefits were. For the most part, things went smooth. I had a few folks who just didn't read my emails or read it and threw it away. Trust me, its well worth the trouble to secure your server and just deal with the customer calls as they come. It will be worse if you get customer calls that their email is being rejected.

And it will be worth the effort. We finally bit the bullet last year and switched to SMTP Auth. It was a couple of weeks of pain, but now we have no problems. Auth works like a charm, we're as tight as you can make it, and I can actually sleep soundly at night. It is, at the end of the day, the only solution if you have users from outside your network trying to transmit mail. The only other method is to get them to send through their ISP's SMTP server, but if that still means they'll be phoning you, so you might as well take the plunge. -- A.
