exchange accounts. Why would both these machines send and receive email from any domain on the Net, but not to each other.

There's nothing magic here.

The first question is DNS. How do Exchange and IMail resolve @recipient.domain for the other server's recipients?

The will each query DNS to find the MX for recipient.domain.

If you are on a RFC1918 net, and don't have private IP zone files, then you can short-circuit DNS resolution with Windows hosts file:

ip.ad.re.ss exchange.domain # in Imail's hosts file

and

ip.ad.re.ss imail.domain # in Exchange's hosts file

The above are variables, you have to fill in the real IPs and domain names, one line for every domain.
