I hate to ask

yeah, right. :)

Len, but do you have any numbers that show what % of false positives your solution would provide?

no. I'm not a FP type of guy.

If you have no idea whether you are blocking 1 in 2,000 legitimate E-mails, or blocking 1 in 20 E-mails, you can't compare your solution with theirs. :)

The proof is in the pudding. Go into the IMGate list and see all the unhappy IMGate admins. Some have been unhappy for 3 years and wouldn't think of becoming happy.

Although rejecting E-mail at the SMTP level is very nice

better than that, it's the best. :)

, it does make it nearly impossible to detect false positives.

We IMGate people just don't belong to that church, so that's not a sin we worry about, sorry.

And blocking E-mail on a single criterion (as quite a few anti-spam programs are now doing) is bad.

Go ask all the IMGate admins how bad it is.

Much worse, though, is blocking E-mail on many single criterion

Go ask all the IMGate admins how bad it is.

Even better, go ask the large number, a majority?, of IMGate admins who were running Declude/Sniffer and then still added IMGate. These people are the unhappiest of all. :)

We've noticed that a lot of the new anti-spam companies are headed for serious trouble

What "serious trouble" would that be? "The sky is falling!" "Wolf!" :)

With even the best spam tests catching 1% or more of legitimate E-mail

The spam problem is so bad that solving that problem is the first, second, third priority.

Then, FPs are dealt with. FPs are both manageable and acceptable when the recipients (our users) are informed:

1. that filtering is being done

2. how to report false positives

3. how to opt out of all filtering

That is, the users sign off on the filtering (which includes the risk of FPs), agree to work with mail admins to correct problems, or opt out.

, it just doesn't make sense to block E-mail based on one test (with a few very rare exceptions).

IMGate's success over the last 3 years says single-criterion rejection makes sense in a very large number of cases.
