Why would they think the company has gone away? There's a difference
between a nonexistent server and a rejection due to "You're on spammer
list xxx".

If you're running a mailserver called "IMail", you can't tell the difference between "That user no longer exists" and "Please go away, we subscribe to ACL" without looking at the log files.

When we were contacted by an ISP that serves over 5 million U.S. customers, we received their RFP and responded (they were looking for anti-spam software). If they sent the RFP to Len and it was blocked, I highly doubt that this Fortune 500 company would jump through hoops to get it to Len. Len could then lose a *huge* contract, but doesn't even count that as a false positive (since he doesn't know he lost it).

So even if the recipient doesn't think the company has gone away, there can still be huge consequences.
