Or, how do you know it isn't a Fortune 500 company sending you a RFP for a major hosting contract versus someone trying to sell you a mortgage?
I can't. I don't. This is why I said "some information". Obviously a script is not clairvoyant and can only glean the information it has at that point in the SMTP conversation. I just want people to realize that the impression that some information about a reject can't be given to the intended recipient is bogus.
You certainly are correct here. A mailserver that rejects E-mail will have log files showing the To:/From:, and that information can be collected and sent to the intended recipients. And it can detect some (but not all) false positives.
If I don't filter, I'm spending my time on dealing with spam and not on answering inquiries in a timely fashion.
I'm not saying "don't filter." I'm saying "Filter based on the results of several tests, rather than just one." By doing so, you are guarantee fewer false positives. And, if you want, you can find out exactly how many false positives there are.
Lots of people seem to get what they think are pretty good results with single test filtering, not realizing that they can significantly reduce false positives by using multiple tests (while catching a similar percentage of spam).
