While my problem had occurred with all file types, when I upgraded to 8.02 and re-installed the stock templates, the problem went away. I have no idea what this fixed or why it wasn't working in the first, place but it seems very odd and very sporadic. When I was on 7.15, all attachments were working then as well. When I was on 8.01 with the 8.01 templates (and maybe 8.0 I'm not sure), then I could not open or download any attachment without corrupting them.
