We run the same Symantec on our IMail Server and I think this is a mixed bag. I agree that as a form of mail AV scanner it does not work well. It does have the penitential to mess with attachments in emails and it will catch some infected attachments, but not all. We have had NAV quarantined an entire mailbox, mail.mbx file, with an infected file inside.
However if we don't scan the files then an administrator working on the server opening a spool file or a mailbox with an infected file risks infecting our server. A good example is that we use Declude and Spamreview. Spamreview allows you to open and view the emails in Spam Hold for quicker processing. We run this program on the IMail. NAV has found numerous infected files in the emails that are located in the Spam Hold directory, which is a sub directory of Imail\spool\ so reviewing our spam has the potential to infect our IMail Server.
