So this is my questions to other IMail Admins: do you auto-respond on
infected messages? What is the most effective strategy here?

Our recommendation is to do one of two things, depending on your needs:

[1] The best option is to send out the notifications (preferably to the recipient, sender, local and remote postmasters), but only if the virus is not one known to forge the return address. This is the recommended option, if you can keep the files up-to-date as new forging viruses come out (typically once every 1-2 months).

[2] The next best option is to remove the sender and remote postmaster notifications. This is the recommended option if you are unable to keep the the list of forging viruses up-to-date.

We do NOT recommend sending out the sender and/or remote postmaster notifications if you cannot keep up-to-date with the new forging viruses. There are HUGE volumes of bogus notifications getting sent out, clogging people's inboxes all over the world.
